📖 Summary
Saint Helen, also known as Saint Helena, was a significant figure in the early Christian church and is revered as a saint in both the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions. Born in the late 3rd century, Saint Helen was the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great and played a crucial role in the spread and establishment of Christianity in the Roman Empire. Her life is intertwined with the story of the True Cross, the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified, and she is often depicted holding a cross in Christian art.
Saint Helen was born in the region of Bithynia, in what is now modern-day Turkey, around the year 250 AD. Little is known about her early life, but it is believed that she was of humble origins and may have been a barmaid or innkeeper before her marriage to the Roman general Constantius Chlorus. After their marriage, Constantius was appointed as the Caesar of the Western Roman Empire, and Helen accompanied him to his capital city of Trier, in present-day Germany. It was there that she gave birth to their son, Constantine, who would later become the first Roman Emperor to convert to Christianity.
Despite being married to a powerful Roman general, Helen's personal faith journey is perhaps her most enduring legacy. It is said that she converted to Christianity later in life, possibly as a result of her son's influence. After Constantine became emperor, he issued the Edict of Milan in 313 AD, which granted religious tolerance to Christians throughout the empire. This marked a turning point for the church, and it is widely believed that Saint Helen played a significant role in shaping her son's policies and guiding him towards Christianity.
One of the most famous episodes in Saint Helen's life is her pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 326 AD. At the age of around 76, she traveled to Jerusalem with the intent of discovering the True Cross, the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. According to tradition, she was inspired to undertake this journey after having a vision of the cross during a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Upon her arrival in Jerusalem, she ordered the demolition of a temple that had been built by Emperor Hadrian on the site of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. During the excavation, three crosses were unearthed, along with the titulus, the inscription that had been nailed to the top of Jesus' cross. To determine which was the True Cross, the Bishop of Jerusalem, Macarius, suggested that the crosses be laid on the body of a dying woman. It is said that when the True Cross touched the woman, she was miraculously healed, confirming its authenticity.
Saint Helen oversaw the construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on the site of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, as well as other churches and shrines in the Holy Land. She also established a hospice for travelers and pilgrims and is credited with promoting the early Christian pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Today, these sites are some of the most important and revered in Christianity, and they continue to attract millions of pilgrims and tourists from around the world.
After her pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Saint Helen returned to Rome, where she continued to support and promote the Christian faith. She is said to have collected relics of the True Cross and other important Christian artifacts, which she brought back to Rome. Saint Helen lived to a ripe old age and passed away around the year 330 AD. Her legacy as an influential and devout Christian, as well as her role in the discovery and veneration of the True Cross, have endeared her to believers throughout the centuries.
Saint Helen's feast day is celebrated on August 18 in the Roman Catholic Church and on May 21 in the Eastern Orthodox Church. She is often depicted in Christian art holding a cross, a symbol of her discovery of the True Cross and her steadfast devotion to the Christian faith. Her life story is a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and the enduring impact of one individual's commitment to their beliefs. Saint Helen remains a beloved and revered figure in both the Catholic and Orthodox traditions, and her memory is honored by millions of Christians around the world.
