Luke's Place Support & Resource Centre For Women & Children

Luke's Place is a unique support and resource centre for women who have experienced abuse and their children providing free family law support services and guidance on how to stay safer. It operates without annualized core funding as a not-for-profit, charitable organization with professional and peer services in a comfortable, accessible and confidential environment. In 2016 we helped 633 women and their children in Durham Region stay safer as they rebuilt their lives free from abuse. In addition to providing this direct service support, we are acknowledged for the important work we do in training, in research and as a resource developer for violence against women organizations across the province. We have provided in-person training and mentorship to thousands of service providers across Ontario. Luke's Place honourably received the Attorney General's Victims Services Awards of Distinction in 2008 and again in 2014. Luke’s Place is named after Luke, a 3½ year old boy killed by his father in 1997. Luke’s mother had serious concerns about Luke’s safety with his father and had applied for supervised access through the family court. She was unsuccessful and Luke was killed by his father, who then killed himself, on his first visit. Following Luke’s death, the Durham Region community came together to work towards making sure no other child would face a similar fate. Our mission is to support abused women and their children throughout the family law process and to provide them and their communities with specialized resources about family law and woman abuse. Our vision is a family law system that promotes healthy, safe families.
