Here at UWashington Formula Motorsports, we design, build, test and compete with an electric, formula-style racecar. Everything that our club produces is done entirely in-house. We produce our own designs, perform our own machining and manufacture our own carbon fiber parts.
What does a typical team member look like?
There is no simple answer, because we are a very diverse group! We have members from 10 different majors, including Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, and Computer Science & Engineering. We even have some Finance and Political Science majors. There are countless learning opportunities for members of our program; they gain valuable experience in design, manufacturing, testing, research, fundraising, management and more. In garnering these experiences, team members excel far ahead of their academic peers in practical engineering know-how.
What is a Formula SAE car?
A Formula SAE car weighs 350 to 450 lbs with horsepower figures ranging from 50-80 hp. The 0-60 MPH dash is in the mid 3-second range. The lateral acceleration of a FSAE car can be as high as 1.9 Gs with braking from 60 to 0 MPH in about 115 ft. These performance numbers will leave most street cars in the dust.
