Description
Information
Spike Island is a heritage island and national monument off the coast of Cobh, under the ownership of Cork County Council. At one time or another in its rich 1300 year history, Spike island has been a monastery, prison, fortress and island home. The island is most famous of its 4 prisons spread across 400 years from the 1600’s until 2004. The 1850’s Victorian prison became so large it was the biggest in the world. The 104 acre site is dominated by the impressive Fort Mitchel, one of the worlds largest star shaped forts at 24 acres that is over 200 years old. Major investment in recent years from owners Cork County Council and part funding by Failte Ireland has seen the site develop into a major international tourist attraction, employing up to 50 staff. The islands rich history is told by guided tours that start with a short ferry ride from Cobh, with audio guides also available. Each visitor receives a free map and app to help them explore. Our wide mix of sightseeing includes prison cells, military fortifications, several museums, scenic island walks and a cafe and gift shop on site. Highlights on the island include the 1985 riot exhibition and cells, the 1850's Punishment block, Irelands largest harbour guns that protect Cork Harbour, the gun park with its military vehicles and canons, the recreation of a transportation ships hull and various media and social history rooms. Plans to redevelop more of the islands considerable 104 acres are underway, to further strengthen Spike Island position as an internationally significant heritage site and the jewel in the crown of Munster tourism. Other activities include drinks tasting tours of Spike Island rum, meeting room hire, after dark tours, cinema club nights and team building and activity centre days for groups.
