The Sargent House Museum was built in 1782 for Judith Sargent Murray (1751-1820), a philosopher, writer and an early advocate of women's equality.
Visitors to the Museum can:
• learn about Judith's life and work amid a small but exquisite collection of American decorative arts and furniture.
• see a collection of original works by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) descendant of the Sargent family, who loved the house and its ties to Post-Revolutionary Gloucester.
The Museum displays one of the finest collections of family portraits in the United States. Major American artists like Fitz Henry Lane, Thomas Sully and James Frothingham are well-represented. The Museum owns several Robert Sheraton pieces of furniture, as well as furniture made in major American furniture centers like Boston, Salem, Newburyport and New Orleans.
Named as one of the Boston Globe's "Top Ten North Shore Attractions" and "One of the 1000 Top Places to see in Massachusetts."
