The mission of the San Diego Pain Summit (SDPS) is an multidisciplinary event that brings together leading researchers and practitioners from around the world who share the latest information, clinical frameworks, and pain research developments to give clinicians a curated selection of the most important information that will increase the impact of their practice.
Pain is a multi-faceted experience. The SDPS supports approaching pain management from the perspective of looking at the person as a whole. Rather than teach clinicians various modalities of pain treatment, the SDPS aims to encourage clinicians to understand and develop ways to help their patients learn self-efficacy in the management of their pain.
This event was created by Rajam Roose in January 2014, during a workshop that she organized for physical and manual therapists. During a break, she overheard the instructor ask the students if they were learning anything about current pain research in their physical therapy programs. A couple of the students said they were but had no idea how to apply it into clinical practice. She immediately realized there was a need for a conference where clinicians can learn relevant applications of current pain research.
This conference is not about teaching specific techniques, rather the goal is to introduce participants to how pain research is being translated and successfully used by other clinicians. With this goal in mind, there have been presentations and workshops on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive functional therapy (CFT), using metaphors and art in patient communication, how to listen to patients, how to encourage patients to be proactive in their own care, how to improve communication with other professionals who may not be knowledgeable about working from a pain science perspective, and gross sciences such as understanding the etiology of neural tissue.
