Lucky Lizard Curios & Gifts in downtown Austin is proud to host 6th Street's strangest tourist attraction, the Museum of the Weird.
According to Lucky Lizard owner and museum curator Steve Busti, "it is an homage to the dime museums of American culture," inspired by those originally introduced to the public by showman extraordinaire P.T. Barnum in the mid-1800's. Dime museums of the day were popular forms of entertainment/pseudo-education around the turn of the last century, and also gave birth to the sideshow.
The Museum of the Weird showcases such curiosities as two-headed animals, shrunken heads, wax figures, a bigfoot exhibit, and a genuine fiji mermaid. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for kids under 12 (free admission if you buy a t-shirt or poster). Open everyday 11am to 11pm.
