At Let Grow, we believe in kids. We believe they are smart, strong and at least as capable as we were at their age.
So why does society insist on bubble-wrapping them? Why are we encouraged to monitor them constantly, in person or with an app, from the day they’re born to the day they leave for college? Why don’t we trust them to do anything safely or successfully on their own?
Because of the twin fears stalking modern day parents: Either our kids will be kidnapped and murdered…or they won’t get into Harvard.
But in fact, treating today’s kids as remarkably vulnerable is bad for their future, and ours. With a wild and robotic economy coming our way, kids need to be flexible, creative problem solvers. They can’t solve their problems if an adult is always there, solving them first.
The winners of tomorrow are comfortable with risk, able to deal with disappointment (even the lack of a trophy), and they do not consider themselves fragile.
At Let Grow, we trust kids to screw up, figure things out, screw up some more, and to make their way in the world as every generation has done until now. It is insulting to act as if somehow this particular generation needs more hand-holding, censorship, and coddling than we did.
As adults, our job is to prepare our child for the path and then…let go.
And Let Grow.
