Into The Glacier

Into the Glacier is the world’s largest man-made ice tunnel carved deep inside Langjokull, one of the world’s largest glaciers. Since opening in 2015 Into the Glacier has become Iceland’s top rated glacier experience and offers year-round adventure and education to visitors of all ages. The Experience From start to finish, Into the Glacier is an unforgettable adventure unlike anything else offered in Iceland. Guests begin by ascending onto Langjokull in a 20-ton ‘Monster’ Glacier Truck custom made from a NATO missile launcher. Once inside visitors strap on crampons and explore an icy labyrinth of gaping crevasses and frozen corridors. Information about the impact of climate change on Iceland's glaciers is communicated through signs along the cave walls and from specially trained glacier guides. The Ice Tunnel Located in the western part of Langjokull (Long Glacier), and 1,260 meters (5380 ft) above sea level, the ice tunnel stretches deep underground giving visitors the chance to see ice that's been forming over centuries. The awe-inspiring ice-tunnel consists of passageways and caves that stretch 500 meters (1640 ft) into solid glacial ice. Building the world’s largest ice tunnel inside one of the world’s largest glaciers was a complex undertaking in a volatile natural environment with many logistical and engineering challenges. These challenges were met head on by teams with specialist knowledge and skills while maintaining high environmental and safety standards. Due to climate change and environmental factors, Into the Glacier is expected to continue as a tourist attraction in Iceland for another 10-15 years.
