Description
Information
Hawthorn Hollow Nature Sanctuary and Arboretum was established in 1967. We began as a grove of native hawthorn trees growing along the Pike River, and in 2016, we doubled in size, growing to almost 100 acres. In response to this growth, an astronomical observatory, The Farm, and new educational programs were introduced. We provide educational programs to people of all ages, combining nature, history and horticulture. Dwarf conifers greet you as you enter the center, and our landscape arboretum, or “outdoor museum” welcomes you as you enter the parking lot. The 12 acre arboretum was designed with the intention of leaving the interior meadow open for a better view from a distance – it was meant to enjoy a casual stroll! Our schoolhouse observatory is open for specific programming throughout the year, offering classes in stargazing, tours of the solar system, and other areas of astronomy. Our Nature Center is enhanced by a Pollinator Garden, and has additional information on Hawthorn Hollow and upcoming events. Members and donors are recognized throughout the property through purchases of bricks, benches, and trees. Hikers, bird watchers, and other nature enthusiasts, enjoy the acres of varied terrain and over 2 miles of trails winding through the woods of the Pike River Valley, including The Old Indian Trail. Our beehives and Honey House are located at the Heritage Farmstead. Our historical buildings are nestled in an area unique to Hawthorn Hollow. A small but valuable area of original prairie, reflecting the type of vegetation that once covered much of the Midwest surrounds the buildings from the north, and the restored prairie surrounds the buildings from the south. Our amphitheater is also the setting for our summer fundraisers, the Pike River Benefit Concert Series, and the Walk in the Woods Art Fair. Pike View Manor is the only portion of the property not open to the public. It is rented out for weddings and special events.
