The Boulder Symphony was originally founded in September 1992 as the Boulder Community Orchestra. It was composed of strings and woodwind players from the Boulder and Longmont areas and under the baton of Andrew P. LeVasseur, it presented two orchestral concerts during the winter and spring of 1993.
The Boulder Symphony moved its home base to the First Presbyterian Church in Boulder to commence its 2010 – 2011 inaugural concert season. Previously, the Boulder Symphony was also know as the (Niwot) Timberline Symphony.
In 1995 Brian St. John won the position of Music Director and led the orchestra through propitious phases of artistic development until 2008. Under his baton, the Timberline Symphony presented new ballets composed by St. John in conjunction with the Longmont Dance Theatre, highlighted local performers, and established a temporary base in Niwot.
After conducting a search for the Boulder Symphony’s third Music Director, Devin Patrick Hughes was selected to lead the Niwot Timberline Symphony Orchestra beginning in the fall of 2008, and is the current Conductor in its new form as the Boulder Symphony. During the tenure of Maestro Hughes, the orchestra has commissioned a handful of new works, commenced a number of artistic collaborations and established itself as the premiere community orchestra of Boulder County.
