Description
Information
The Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area works with willing partners in 16 West Virginia counties and 2 counties in western Maryland to explore and enhance the relationship between the forested mountains and the people who live here. With the overall theme of forest heritage, we focus on conservation, forestry, cultural heritage, asset-based tourism and community development. The AFNHA mission is to work locally to conserve, develop, interpret, and promote a regional network of forest-based resources and experiences in the highlands of West Virginia and Maryland for the enjoyment and appreciation of residents and visitors in order to enhance economic and community development. The four initial goals are to: 1. Develop a regional Heritage Area based on forest heritage. 2. Develop and promote a cohesive regional network of forest heritage tourism destinations. 3. Strengthen small businesses, communities, and grassroots organizations; foster local economic development; and build regional partnerships. 4. Provide interpretation of a broad range of forest themes. AFNHA operates a AmeriCorps program through National and State program though Volunteer West Virginia. AFNHA AmeriCorps members provide a year of service, allowing an individual to benefit local communities and landscapes while gaining professional development and strengthening their own skills. AFNHA AmeriCorps members serve in a variety of positions at partner sites, within the following fields: Conservation: Conserve natural resources including ecosystem restoration and land improvement, habitat monitoring, and environmental education, awareness, and outreach. Heritage Community Development: Help rural communities with economic development, events, partnerships, and tourism based on their local assets and cultural resources. Develop and conserve local history and arts and encourage cultural heritage tourism.
