Women's Brain Project

Women’s Brain Project (WBP) is an international non-profit organization studying sex and gender determinants to brain and mental health. Founded in 2016 by Dr. Maria Teresa Ferretti, Dr. Gautam Maitra, Dr. Antonella Santuccione Chadha and Dr. Annemarie Schumacher Dimech, the WBP is composed by a group of scientists hailing from various disciplines including medicine, neuroscience, psychology, pharmacology, and communication who work together with caregivers, patients and their relatives, policymakers, and other stakeholders. WBPs goal is to transform the state of medical treatments and drug development through sex and gender factors as a gateway to precision medicine and care. Health begins with human beings, individuals. Men and women are different when it comes to brain and mental disease frequency, severity, symptomatology and even response to treatments. Through our work, we learned that the scientific world and civil society have not sufficiently acknowledged this issue and are instead still operating under the assumption that a one-size-fits-all approach benefits all. WBP advocates for a paradigm shift in global health towards sustainability by considering the specific biological, psychosocial and economic requirements of each patient, regardless of sex or gender.
